As guitar builders, we live and die by the centerline. As repair people, I would say we live and die by the nut. This little component of the guitar sits right between the tuning machines and the fretboard and has a huge impact on the tone and overall playing experience of the instrument. The nut is responsible for your string spacing and action height as well as transferring the energy of all those beautiful notes into the resonance of the neck. There are many different materials such as bone, brass, antler, or horn, and even synthetic tusq that would be a considerable upgrade from a plastic nut or saddle. I can’t recommend this procedure enough if you want to maximize the tonal potential and feel of your instrument.
